The Magic Fountain
You do not know how to spend the evenings in Barcelona? Then you should take a look at the Montjuïc Magic Fountain show near Plaça Espanya. This shows a spectacular display of color, light, music and water acrobatics. The combination of all these elements end up in pure magic. Definitely a must-see if in Barcelona.
The Magic Fountain is the main feature of the collection of waterfalls and ponds which stretches from Palau Nacional to Plaça Espanya in Montjuïc. The spectacular fountain is very popular because of its water show arrangements, the sound and lighting and the 2.600 liters of water which the fountain pumps per second.
The Magic Fountain was one of the last features built for the International Exposition of 1929.
In 1928, it was decided to use lights to turn the central avenue into an “a fiery ember”, a project commissioned to Carles Buïgas, engineer and chief of the electro-mechanical installations section of the Exposition.
Buïgas thought up a new type of fountain in which the true art is the changing shapes of its jets of water. The project was completed with the cascades and fountains installed in various spots along Av. Maria Cristina. However, the fundamental feature was the monument situated on a platform erected at the end of the avenue with the perspective of the National Palace in the background. On the feast of “La mercé”, 24th September, it becomes the scene of a music and fireworks spectacle.
