Mies Van der Rohe Pavilion

This German Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was built for the 1929 World Exposition in Barcelona. This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition. It was an important building in the history of modern architecture. It is known for its simple form and extravagant materials, such as marble and travertine.

The only practical function of the Barcelona Pavilion was to host the King and Queen of Spain as they signed the visitors' book at the Barcelona World Exhibition in 1929.

Furthermore, the Pavilion received little attention during its brief lifetime. The building lasted six months before it was dismantled and its materials sold, since the late twenties were a time when Modernists were struggling to gain commissions and acceptance of their ideas.

Nonetheless, it remained an icon of the Modern Movement throughout the 20th century, and it was reconstruction by a team of local architects in 1986. It was for modeling new opportunities for an association of free art and architecture. Nonetheless, the building soon became a totem for Mies' contemporary work.
