Parc de la Ciutadella

The Parc de la Ciutadella is one of Barcelona’s most beautiful and popular parks, located in Ciutat Vella. The locals called it the first green area in the city for decades, and therefore the most popular. Nowadays the park has a lot of competition, but it is still one of the most popular in town.

The park hosts within its 280.000 m2 the city’s zoo, the Parliament building of Catalonia, a beautiful lake, museums, and a fountain of considerable size which was designed by Josep Fontsere. The Ciutadella Park is characterized as a very busy park, flooded with tourists and locals, who are usually going for walks or simply having an enjoyable and relaxing day. The park is also ideal for sporting activities such as boating in the lake, cycling, jogging or roller skating.

The Zoo

The main attraction in the Ciutadella Park is the zoo. This was mainly due to the famous albino gorilla Snowflake, who attracted many international tourists and locals. Unfortunately, he died in 2004.

You can find almost 7.000 animals in Barcelona’s zoo, from which its first animals were donated by Lluís Martí I Codolar. Near the zoo's entrance, you can find the famous climbable gigantic stone mammoth, just as the metallic cat in another perimeter of the park.

Nowadays, with one of the most substantial collections of animals in Europe, the zoo affirms that their aim is to conserve, investigate, and educate.

The Lake

The lake characterizes the park as scenery, enjoyable for couples. It is very romantic to go on a boat ride in the Ciutadella’s Lake while enjoying time with your loved one. Just next to it lays the thickest and most beauteous vegetation that can be spotted in the green areas of Barcelona. There is a locally famous tree which grows inside the water; it separates from the others, due to its attractive form and its propagation of bananas.

The Cascada

At the northern corner of Ciutadella’s park is the Cascada. It is a triumphal arch with a waterfall and fountain built for the 1888 World exhibition. The Baroque construction was designed by Josep Fontsère, and it took six years to complete this building. The design was based on the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The architect was assisted by Antoni Gaudí, which was still a student at that time.

Beside the usual individual visits and different types of guided tours, the park offers other activities such as workshops, excursions and fieldtrips for schoolchildren, personnel trainings and educational courses in zoology for adults.

The zoo is visited annually by more than 50.000 children. Finally the park idea was imposed, especially because it was originally meant to benefit the vast society of Barcelona, and the city needed for a place where people could meet, walk, talk and pass the time walking in the nature.

Today the park is like an open museum, thanks to the quantity and quality of the sculptures that are situated in it.
