Cementeri de Montjuic

The Montjuic cemetery is located on one of the rocky slopes of the Montjuic hill in Barcelona. It is about 23 hectares. Due to a growing expansion of the population during the first part of the 20th Century, the Poblenou cemetery was not enough alone to welcome all the deceased. Opened in March 1983, it nows contain over a million burials and cremation ashes.

The particular design of the cemetery is due to the steep slopes of the hillside and coincides with several artistic movements  such as classic and gothic styles or Art-Nouveau. The morbid atmosphere has its own charm; you can experience 150 years of art history and discover a unique place of silence in the Catalan capital city. Originally the cemetery was planned as a strictly symmetrical system, but with the growth of the cemetery the steep area of Montjuic was also adapted. Although locals do not appreciate this place, not because of its atmosphere but mostly because Catalans do not like the idea that a cemetery could be a tourist attraction, it is an interesting place to visit in order to discover an art or historical route through an incredible atmosphere.
