Olympic Games Barcelona
06.09.2010 09:42
The Olympic Games the most celebrated and spectacular multi-cultural and multi-sports event in the world took place in Barcelona in the year 1992. The summer games started July 25th and lasted until August 9th were to become an event with many changes and wonderful developments.
For the first time in history since 1972 the games could be held without any boycotts and various nations could send their own teams for the first time due to the fall of the Soviet Union, e.g. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Also, Germany could send its first united team to the Olympics for the first time in history since 1964 due to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. Furthermore, South Africa that had been suspended from participation due to the Apartheid system in 1960 was allowed to compete for the first time since then.
The Games took place all over the city with the Olympic stadium (where the opening and closing ceremonies were held) as well as the swimming facilities being located on the Montjuic hill with view over all of the city of Barcelona and the sea. The Olympic Village was located in Poblenou, a neighbourhood directly next to the ocean and the beaches of Barcelona.
The Games brought a lot of change to the Catalonian capital. Before the local government had widely neglected many parts of the city such as the beaches, parks and green areas. All of these were reconstructed, renewed or completely replaced which led Barcelona to shine in a completely new, beautiful and modern light once the Games had started. It also gave the city a huge boost in terms of tourism and ever since then Barcelona has become one of the most popular destinations for sightseeing in Spain.
Even though the Olympics lie almost 20 years back in the past now, one can still admire the stadium, the Olympic museum and remaining facilities and the city has not lost any of the newly acquired fame and beauty since then.
