Sant Jordi 2009: What a day!

I just came back from visiting the old city alter a long morning in the office, wondering what kind of Sant Jordi is waiting for us today. Well, the first think to mention is the great weather…well not really great weather but rather amazingly great weather! Not a cloud in the sky, 20ºC, nice fresh wind to spread a little the heat, what else can you ask for a Sant Jordi day?
I started my walk in Rambla Catalonia, just around the corner of our office. This beautiful avenue was closed for motor vehicle traffic and became a total pedestrian area, amazingly packed with people, all kind of people, mainly locals but also many tourists… young people, old people, black people, white people, brown people (like me) fat people, thin people, pretty people and ugly people… but most of all I saw a lot of happy people. I love the Sant Jordi day even though I am not Catalan and not even Spanish. I love it because it is about love and romance (it is a kind of Catalan Saint valentines days, were the couples give one each other a present: a rose and a book), I also love it because it is the celebration of culture, the literature culture in general (as this day also represents the International literature day) and the Catalan culture in particular.

What a wonderful combination for a national celebration! Literature, romance and tradition, all celebrated in perfect harmony, in perfect order and with perfect atmosphere that only a beautiful city such as Barcelona can provide and that only great culture such as the Catalan culture can produce.
I finished my round and went back to the office to continue to deal with apartment rentals, thinking to myself that today finally I saw happy people, many happy people…and it made me very happy.
