La Font Màgica de Montjuïc – The magical fountain of the Montjuic
Thursday, 30 April 2009 12:59
The Font Màgica or magic Fountain was one of the last features built for the International Exposition of 1929, owing to the change of direction taken by the organization of this event whit the arrival of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera.
In 1928 it was decided to use lights to turn the central avenue into an “a fiery ember”, a project commissioned to Carles Buïgas, engineer and chief of the electromechanical installations section of the Exposition. Buïgas thought up a new tipe of fountain in which the true art is the changing shapes of its jets of water. The project was completed with the cascades and fountains installed in various spots along Av. Maria Cristina. However, the fundamental feature was the monumental situated on a platform erected at the end of the avenue with the perspective of the National Palace in the background. On the feast of “La mercé”, 24th September, it becomes the scene of a music and fireworks spectacle.
