Anella Olimpica
Thursday, 30 April 2009 13:57
One of the major Transformations of Montjuïc hill in the past century was carried out for the holding of the 1992 Summer Olympics. Indeed, the Olympics left Montjuïc an important architectural legacy: the Anella Olímpica or Olympic Ring. This complex includes the Palau Sant Jordi, which was designed especially as the venue for the handball and volleyball competitions, the Picornell swimming pools, and Santiago Calatrava’s Communications Tower. Adjacent to the Olympic Ring stands the Lluís Companys Stadium, which had been erected in the 1930s and was fully remodelled for the 1992 Olympics. It is now until February 2009 the home stadium of the first-division soccer club RCD Espanyol.
