Coca de Sant JuanCoca is a dough-based food that can be prepared and eaten as a savoury or sweet dish and that is known in different variations throughout the Mediterranean area and it can be eaten as a type of bread, pizza or cake/pastry. It is very popular in Catalonia and there are some typical Catalan variations that are usually consumed during holidays and for special occasions.

For instance, for the holiday of Sant Juan that takes place in mid-June every year the Coca de Sant Juan is prepared that is a special, sweet cake with pine nuts and dried candied fruit. It is sold everywhere in Catalonia before the holiday and traditionally eaten at night on the beaches were people traditionally celebrate Sant Juan with a huge bonfire or at home and in restaurants. However, it is also consumed the day after that is a public holiday in Catalonia as a dessert or as a snack during the afternoon. Coca is also a must on the treat list for Easter and Christmas in Catalonia.

Other savoury variations are the Coca de recapte that usually contains meat and vegetable as a filling or topping or the Coca de Xulla that is prepared with bacon and other meats.

The coca is not just traditional to Catalonia but can be found in different variations throughout Spain, France and Italy as well. However, it is Catalonia that associates this type of dish with holidays and celebrations.
