Plaza Cataluña - Plaça Catalunya

Everybody who has visited Barcelona, or will visit Barcelona, will definitely see the famous Plaça Catalunya, which is the heart of the Catalan capital. It is the first destination in Barcelona city, and it is also a main meeting point for people. Plaça Catalunya has a little bit of everything: Modern cafes, monuments, shops, hotels, bars and beautiful fountains.

This square connects the old city with the modern part of Barcelona. At one side, you will find the Eixample district, and on the other side, you will find Raval and Barri Gòtic. Another connected landmark of the city to the square is Las Ramblas, which starts from Plaça Catalunya and heads downwards to Port Vell.

Besides that, Plaça Catalunya has a few interesting monuments and sculptures of different artistic movements such as Noucentrisme, Neoclassicism and Avant-garde.

Other than its monuments, this square offers a vast variety of stores such as El Corte Inglés, a famous Spanish department store, where you can find anything and everything, and two of the most famous shopping routes of the city, which are Portal de l’Angel and Passeig de Gracia. On these shopping streets, you will find from boutiques and international stores to expensive designer brands.

If you want to stop and relax at Plaça Catalunya, you can find here plenty of cafes and restaurants for enjoying a cold drink and some typical Spanish dishes. Café Zürich, Maison Dorée, Café Colón, La Lluna, Café Suis, Hard Rock Cafes, and many other establishments are around the area.

Regarding accommodations, this square is the most popular and desired location in Barcelona. Many hotels, hostels and holiday apartments are located near Plaça Catalunya.

Transport

This square is Barcelona’s most important transport point, both above and underground. The Barcelona metro L1 and L3 can be taken here, as well as the FGC L6 and L7 in all directions.

Furthermore, there are plenty of buses from Plaça Catalunya. There are even night busses available, which are known as Nitbus Barcelona.

Lastly, there are Shuttle busses between Plaça Catalunya and Barcelona’s airport “El Prat” driving every 10 minutes from the square. The bus is called Aerobus, and there are two different types: Aerobus 1, which departs from and to Terminal 1, and Aerobus 2, which departs from and to Terminal 2.
