In and Around Barcelona

hospital sant pau, apartments in barcelonaThe Hospital Sant Pau (Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau - Hospital de la Santa Cruz y San Pablo) is situated in a building complex in side Barcelona which was designed by the famous Catalan architect, Lluis Domenec i Montaner, one of the main representatives of the Catalan modernism architecture. The principal building of the hospital, together with the various pavilions the Hospital Sant Pau, with the institute of Pere Meta de Reus which was also designed by Domenec, are representing one of the biggest modernist complexes of buildings in CataloniaThis complex was planned with the idea of occupying a surface equal to 9 squares or blocks (Manzanas) of the “ensanche”, each block of size of 300 meters by 300 meters.

The main building is dedicated to the hospital administration and the 27 pavilions are dedicated to the serve as clinics. All the different buildings are connected by underground galleries, prepared for transporting the patients.

In 2003, works started for the edification of the new building, in the upper northern part of the complex, with the idea that this new building will replace the many different pavilions. There is still doubts as for the future purpose that will be given to the historic buildings, declared by UNESCO as World Heritage site.
