The Calvet house
Monday, 19 July 2010 06:00
Antoni Gaudi is most likely the name people recognize from Barcelona. His great works such as Parc Guell and Sagrada Familia are only two examples of many must-see sites in the city of Barcelona. In comparison to the more well-known buildings Gaudi has been involved in the construction of many other buildings as well. One early work of Gaudi is the Calvet house. The building is considered to be his most conventional work, although it displays Gaudi's sense of form which has been applied to the rest of his amazing architecture that he constructed in Barcelona.
The house was built between 1899-1904 as a home for a textile manufacturer at that time. The building has five floors and is located in Barcelona's most elegant section but between
the older residences of the area. Gaudi's style can clearly be seen in the exterior of the house where the facade has a symmetry and order. Although, the balconies, entrance and the detail fo the top gable gives a sense of modernity. On the top of the facade three sculptures of heads are present, which represents allusions to the owners,
one is the owners's father (Sant Pere Màrtis Calvet i Carbonell) and the two other heads are patron saints of Calvet's hometown Villasar.
