The Beach
Tuesday, 16 March 2010 10:27
Barcelona is such a popular tourist destination largely because of its climate and thus its beach. People who visit the city can enjoy the amazing sites, which are enough in themselves, the incredible culture and still enjoy sitting on the beach and swimming in the sea. There is a stretch of coastline in Barcelona which is separated into 3 parts going north from the port. The most popular, due to its location essentially at the end of the Ramblas, by Barceloneta metro, is Barceloneta Beach. In the summer this beach can only be described as swarming, but if you are prepared to do anything for a tan then no doubt you will be able to stomach it.

You can go a bit further to Icaria beach which is just one metro stop onwards at Cituadella - Vila Olimpica right by hotel Arts the first 5* hotel in Barcelona built in aid of the Olympics. This beach is slightly less crowded and home to all the fancy clubs and restaurants like Shoko and Opium. The one other beach is a nudist beach two more stops on at Poble Nou. Bella Beach is about 20 minutes walk from the metro and although is defined as nudist, it is not a problem if you wear clothes.
The weather starts hotting up by April and people are still on the beach in October and the 'swarming' only applies to the peak months in the summer. Don't over look the town of Barceloneta itself on your way down. The rows of flats are such a community and people sit outside their houses chilling in the streets with their neighbours all day. There is also so me of the best cuisine down on the sea front, with, understandably a large emphasis on seafood. Barceloneta is more authentic and Catalan and further up by Villa Olimpica is a little bit commercialised, but be sure to grab something to eat if you are down there.
If however the amount of people is a problem for you do not rule out Sitges and the beaches on the way there like Castelldefels, which is just beyond the airport. They are almost deserted and absolutely beautiful. Sitges fills up during peak season too but not the extent of Barcelona. You can get there by train for very little and it is a great day out.
