Santa Maria de Pedralbes Monastery
Wednesday, 25 March 2009 09:59
Although it located off the touristic centre of the city, the monastery of Pedralbes is a unique visiting point within and should be part of your tour in Barcelona.
The monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes was founded by Elisenda de Montcada, wife of Jaume II in 1326. The ensamble of the monastery is formed by large cloister that is dominated by the church and surrounded by the various halls and buildings of the religious community.

The church of the monastery of Pedralbes is a large construction in a gothic style with a single nave that is roofed with ogival vaults. A heptagonal apse forms the end of the church, which is lighted by a number of large windows and rose windows. The chapter house, from the 15th century, is the most substantial work of the whole monastery, together with the chapel of the St. Michael, which is decorated entirely with 15th century frescoes by Ferrer Bassa. Inside the conventual complex is the monastery museum. It displays collection of paintings, ceramics, gold and silverwork, fabrics, parchments and liturgical ornaments.
