Sant Jordi
Monday, 31 August 2009 10:41
Catalunya, like nearly all the Spanish regions, has a great richness of customs and traditions, with fiestas filling the squares and streets with activity all year round.
One of the most popular fiestas is Sant Jordí, patron saint of Catalunya, celebrated on 23 April. The ritual consists of going for a stroll, and buying a rose or a book for loved ones from one of the many stalls in the street. This is an important day for Catalans.
The origins of the celebration are a mix of customs and traditions from different eras. The patron Saint has been celebrated oficially since 1456, with the medieval custom of a flower fair for lovers in the Palacio de la Generalitat.
To these more traditional celebrations, the Day of the Book was added in 1926, rounding off the mix of celebrations that now is Sant Jordi.
