Passeig de Gràcia
Wednesday, 01 April 2009 11:22
Passeig de Gràcia forms the vertical axis of Cerdà’s plan for the construction of the Eixample, following the straight line of the old road from Barcelona to the town of Gràcia. This road became a broad tree-lined boulevard in 1827. Its central part, as on the Ramblas today, was a place where people strolled. At the end of the 19th century it became the residential area of the wealthiest Catalan bourgeoise. In the 60’s the pavements were broadened, granting motor traffic the privilege of occupying the centre of the boulevard. From that time on, visitors have enjoyed two large walkways from which they can see the beautiful buildings and look at the display windows of the luxurious shops flanking the boulevard, the main thoroughfare of the Barcelona Shopping Line.
Passeig de Gràcia is often one of the first places people see when they visit Barcelona, with Guadi´s modernist fantasy building La Pedrera and equally weird casa Batlló being some of Barcelona´s most popular tourist attractions.
