A Rooftop in the old city apartment

USERRATING 8/10 2012-05-20 by client The location was very central. It not in the most secure part of the city. The terrace was fabulous and made our stay really enjoyable. Would have been nice to have some basic extras for cooking such as oil and condiments and a larger coffee pot. The bed is low so not the best for people with restricted flexibility. In and Around Barcelona

holiday apartments barcelonaMontjuïc is a hill on the south west side of the city looking over the harbour. It is famous for its wonderful gardens and fortifications. Literally meaning "hill of the jews" in medieval Catalan, there are also Montjuïcs in Girona and Menorca. The castle of Montjuïc, which was once used as a prison and has been the site of many executions, still remains today. Now however Park Montjuïc is home to many, wonderful sites. The road around the hill used to be the site of the Barceloan Grand Prix, but due to a terrible accident in 1975 saw the track closed and never used again.

There is the Fundació Joan Miró a modern art museum focusing largely on the pieces of Joan Miró. It costs 8€ for adults and 6€ for concessions and is open from 10am to 7pm and 8pm in the summer monthes of July, August and September.

There is also the Olympic Stadium, actually built in 1929 for the 1936 Olympics it was never used as the Spanish Civil War broke out, and so was the home of the football team Espanyol until 2008 when they moved to El Prat. Refurbished for the 1992 Olympic Games, the stadium did indeed get to host the opening and closing ceremony and was where the athletics was held. The swimming pool and indoor arena are both on Monjuïc too. There is an Olympic Museum you can visit, full of interesting facts and galleries from the games.

Montjuïc is a beautiful place to visit, there is so much to see, including Botanical Gardens, the magic fountain which is spectacular at night and it is a perfect place to go with friends or family for great sights and a great view of the city.

Montjuïc is on the Green line Metro or you can get the 55 bus from Plaza Catalunya.

Entrancing views over Barcelona - you can see all of the city from Montjuïc, and get close-ups (with the binoculars that you can find almost anywhere on the mountain) of Segrada Familla and other famous buildings for only 1 euro.
You can also sit on wooden stairs/benches on the side of the castle and overlook the entire harbour of Barcelona. Beautiful, relaxing and definitely a great thing to do as a break from the beat of the big city.
