Montjuïc Castle
Wednesday, 16 June 2010 13:11
Located on the summit of Montjuic, the Castle of Montjuïc offers a wonderful view of Barcelona, the port and the sea. It has been built in the 17th Century and today it is a attraction for tourists who want to enjoy not only the view but also the nature.
The castle has been built in 1640 under Philip IV. It served to oversee the city and not, as many people suppose, to defend the city.
The fortress was used from 20 Century on as a prison for political prisoners and many executions have taken place. During the civil war in Spain, there were 173 people executed including the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys in 1940.
After restoration works of three years, a military museum was opened in the castle in 1963. In the museum, visitors can see weapons and military artefacts from various eras and different countries. In addition, exhibitions, seminars and even concerts are organised in the castle.
Because of the beautiful nature, the numerous paths and fountains and the beautiful scenery, a walk to the castle itself is worth. But the castle can also be reached by bus, taxi or cable car.
