In and Around Barcelona

The Ramblas in Barcelona is one of the most emblematic places in the city.  Every tourist that visits Barcelona cannot help ambling down it. From its highest point at Plaza Catalunya to the Cristopher Columbus (Colón)monument at the bottom, this single avenue has five different names that characterize them: first of all Rambla de Canaletes, then Estudios,  Flores, Centre and Santa Monica.
We shall learn a little more about Rambla de las Flores (Avenue of Flowers).

During the XIX Century it was the only place in Barcelona that sold flowers,  and in the gatherings of people that formed around the flower stalls, the painter Ramon Casas, who introduced impressionism to Catalunya, found his most beautiful model, who would later become his wife.

The flower stalls actually share their space with news Quiosks, which sell newspapers and magazines, both national and international, some of which are open 24 hours a day.

We can also see the Human Statues, people who dress up as fantastic figures such as the tin man from the Wizard of Oz, or ghostly figures that could well have come straight out of a play from Don Juan Tenerio.

This part of the Ramblas is alsoknow as Rambla de San José due to its proximity to the square of the same name.
