Of the three emblematic buildings at the “Block of Discord”, the Amatller House was the first to be erected (between 1898 and 1900), although its architect, Josep Puig I Cadafalch, belonged to a younger generation than the designers of the other two edificies. Puig I Cadafalch was commissioned this house by the Amatllers, who engaged in the manufacture of chocolate and were a prominent family among the old Catalan merchant class.

It forms a beautiful example of the “Modernista” style of Gothic inspiration. The “Modernisme” of the Casa Amatller combines references to the Catalan Gothic with elements from the medieval tradition of the Netherlands, in addition to sculptural details belonging to folk iconography.
