Barceloneta Beach
Friday, 03 September 2010 09:01
Barceloneta beach is not just the longest beach in the city of Barcelona but also the most central and popular one with the best infrastructure and the most services available. It has a length of 1.1 km and it is so well connected to the rest of the city due to its own metro stop (yellow line) and a variety of buses that it is also the easiest to reach and most visitors go there by public transport.
How to reach?
Take the yellow metro line L4, and get off at stop Barceloneta. Turn to the right after leaving the metro and cross the main street in the beach direction. Continue walking straight on for approximately 10 minutes. Barceloneta is the first of Barcelona`s beaches and the nearest one and can therefore be quite busy during the summer months in Barcelona.
You can also reach it by walking down the famous Las Ramblas and all these factors make Barceloneta especially popular amongst tourists. Unfortunately, this leads to a usually overcrowded beach in the summer time and you will hardly find any locals there as they generally leave the city if they want to take a sunbath or dip into the sea.
What to do?
There are plenty of things to do on the beach, besides swimming. Windsurfing and kite surfing are becoming more and more popular in Barcelona. What would be cooler than give it a try? You can also simply enjoy a refreshing drink at one of the many beach bars. Just need a break? Lie down and enjoy the Spanish sun while reading a good book.
But Barcelonetas beach is not only enjoyable on daytime, but it is becoming more fun in the evening hours. During the summer months, there are plenty of festivals, which are mostly held on the beach, such as beach parties and fireworks during for example the Sant Juan festival in the night of 23/24 June. Furthermore you can go out every night at one of the bars alongside the beach which will be transformed to clubs in the evenings. You will definately find a club of preferance for an evening you will always remember.
Nonetheless, Barceloneta offers a great infrastructure with many restaurants, bars, shops, toilets and other services.
So for example you can find there a nice children’s playground or a gym area where usually lots of men work out in the sun. You can also just sit there and watch either kids or athletes or join in, as all areas are open and freely accessible. There are also volleyball courts, a skating area, ping-pong tables as well as table soccer. Even a beach library service is available in the summer for those that prefer a more quiet and relaxed way of spending their day.
In terms of safety you can be assured that there a lifeguards as well as police available and there is nothing in the way of a relaxed and fun time at the Barceloneta beach of Barcelona.
