Fundacio Joan Miro
Joan Miró (1893-1983), is a famous Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramist. He was a representative of Surrealism although he never admitted it. Also he was influenced by cubism, expressionism and Color Field painting. He has several famous pieces exhibited in different locations in the world, one of them is "Fundacio Miró". Joan Miro's other works can be seen in National Gallery of Art in Washington or on the walls of UNESCO building in Paris (wall of Moon and Wall of Sun) which are significantly famous.
The Joan Miró Foundation is located in an exceptional building designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert. It stands in Montjuïc Park, with magnificent views over Barcelona and its harbor. The foundation, which opened in June 1975, houses the largest public collection of Joan Miró's works. He is considered one of the most influential and universal artists of the twentieth century.
The foundation had its origins in Miró's first large exhibition in Barcelona, in 1968, at the old Hospital de la Santa Creu. Several figures from the world of art saw the opportunity to have a space in Barcelona dedicated to the artist's work. However, in accordance with his wishes, the new institution was also to promote and publicize the work of contemporary artists in general.
At a time when art and culture were not highly relevant, the Foundation brought a refreshing image, together with a new, more dynamic concept of an art museum, in which Miró's art has been shown along side a wide variety of creative works by other artists, a fact that is reflected in the foundation's full name, which is Center for the Study of Contemporary Art.
The gallery consists of around 300 paintings, 150 sculptures, 9 textiles, practically all of Miró's graphic work, and over 8000 drawings from the earliest manifestation of his artistic sensibilities to the final years of his life. You can find his early paintings like Portrait of a Young Girl, Flame in Space and Nude Woman, and also his work of sculpture and ceramics. In addition to those, there are textiles, prints and illustrated books of his work.
In the museum, there are also temporary exhibitions and workshops. However, to see Miró's work, you can look around the city, especially in Parc de Joan Miró, or the pavement at the Pla de l´Os in the Rambla.
