One of the early work of Gaudí is the Calvet house. The building is considered to be his most conventional work, although it displays Gaudí's sense of form, which has been applied to the rest of his amazing architecture in Barcelona.
The house was built between 1899-1904 as a home for a textile manufacturer at that time. It has five floors and is located in Barcelona's most elegant area. Gaudí's style can clearly be seen in the exterior of the house, where the facade has a symmetry and order.
Nonetheless, its balconies, entrance and the detail of the top gable give a sense of modernity. On the top of the facade, there are three head sculptures. One is the face of the owners' father (Sant Pere Màrtis Calvet i Carbonell) and the two other heads are patron saints of Calvet's hometown, Vilassar.
The gallery at ground level is the façade's most outstanding feature, a daring combination of wrought iron and stone, in which decorative historical elements such as a cypress, an olive tree, horns and the Catalan coat of arms can be distinguished.
Nowadays, there is a restaurant located in The Calvet house. The previous accounting offices, management and boardrooms have been converted into semi private dining rooms, where taste and elegance is preserved to the delight of the customers. Restaurant Casa Calvet is an unique and exclusive place where dining will be an incredible experience with the beauty of Gaudí's work.
