From a practicality point of view zou should give a little thought to what you wear if you are visiting Barcelona. It is alwazs wise to trza dn blend in with the locals, to avoid unwanted attention and show a bit of respect. Ofcourse you have the right to dress how zou like but whilst visiting certain places, do be aware of tradition. For instance if you are visiting a church make sure you are not too scantily clad, religion is still a large part of Spanish cultutre.
So as not to single yourself out as a tourist you should dress slightlz more conservatively. In the summer it gets very hot but you will not see locals in shorts and a bikini. Save this very much for the beach. When in the city, wear a skirt or baggy trousers to keep cool and avoid stereotypical items like bumbags. Indeed they are practical but it will make you a target. Similary, stay away from gearish colours, you will notice in the shops that there are fewer bright colours. That is not to say the Spanishwear boring clothes, but they do tend to stick to the more autumnal colours.

When it comes to how smart you should be, there is not really a problem. The only place you need to make an effort is for the smart clubs and hotels. Like any other country boys cannot wear trainers (no matter how designer or expensive thay are) to places like this. Girls need to look as if they have made an effort and boys need leather shoes and a collar.
As for what is availiable fashion wise, in Spain; There are shops like Mango and Zara, one of England's most famous and popular highstreet stores is everywhere, and many people argue it is better in its home country. Shopping in Barcelona is very good, you have all the designer clothes you could want as well as many well known highstreet brands. There are lots of little shops and markets where you can pick up great jewellery and accessoies, but beware the boho kind of clothes. Often you can make a purchase of something that you wear lots on holiday but the second you return to your home country, the item no longer translates. Alwways bare this in mind when shopping abroad. Having said that, if you like the bohemian, hippy look then there are worse cities than Barcelona to shop in.
Shops open around 10am but stay open later than in the UK, so you will have plenty of time to have a good look round the shops.
