Costa Brava beachThe famous Costa Brava is a coastal region that belongs to Catalonia in the north of Spain. It stretches out 214km from the river La Tordera close to the city of Barcelona until the city of Portbou at the border to France. It was first called Costa Brava in the year 1907 by the journalist Ferran Agullo that tried to describe the beautiful landscape and coastal line with its sandy beaches and mild temperatures that appeared to be wild and yet undiscovered. Therefore, he chose the name Costa Brava (Wild Coast). Ever since then the area has quickly become a destination for millions of tourists that come every year during the summer time to enjoy the sandy beaches and to relax on the Costa Brava. The most touristy and popular places are Blanes, Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar that attract particularly young people (especially from England, France and Germany) that want to party and relax in the sun.
So if you are seeking a quiet and tranquil holiday experience those places are probably not the best option for you.

However, there are still wonderful small villages and towns that have preserved their ancient fishermen character and that are definitely worth a visit. There you can enjoy some of the original Costa Brava spirit and enjoy some great Catalan food (especially seafood of course, but also meats, cheeses, cakes etc…) and wine.
Additionally, the area has some great history and art to offer so for example you can visit the Dalí Museum in Figueres that houses the world’s biggest collection of famous artist's work or you can visit his house/museum in Port Lligat.

So no matter if you are looking for party, fun and beaches or a more quiet and relaxing vacation, the Costa Brava can offer both to you and you will not regret visiting the area.
