F.C. Barcelona or "Barça”, as the club is popularly known, was founded in 1899 by Swissborn Hans Gamper and eleven other enthusiasts in the beginnings of what was to become modern-day soccer. More than a century of history , full of great victories (including two European Cups and 18 league titles) and times of misfortune , has forged the personality of an institution which is said to be “much more than a club”. Indeed, in the times of its greatest hardships, coinciding with the dictatorship of General Franco, it became a symbol of freedom and an expression of the cultural and political identity of Catalonia.
