Plaza del Rey is a hidden gem in the Gothic Area. It is a small square with little to it except some beautiful architecture and a great atmoshpere at night. The square itself is made up of 3 different buildings. The first is the Tinell room which was commissioned in the 14th Century by King Pedro, the second is the Royal Chapel of St. Agatha built a little earlier at the very beginning of the 14th Century on behalf of King James of Aragon, it is an extension of the famous cathedral and has an alterpiece inside which was painted by the Jaime Huguet. The third and final building is The Palace of Lloctinet which was built by King Carlos, later in 1549.

Not only is it beautiful by day and houses The Museum of History of Barcelona and the Archives of the Aragon Crown, but at night it is spectacularly lit, and even though it is in the middle of the city you feel somewhat removed as it is so tucked away. There is one bar at the entrance to the square where you can sit outside in the summer and enjoy a drink. There are some steps in the corner of the square where people sit and often busk so there is sometimes music, even bands with double basses and trumpets. You feel like you are back in time because of the architecture and yet there is a very bohemian feel about it.

The bar is called L'Antiquari and is worth a visit.
