Located on the summit of Montjuic, the Castle of Montjuïc offers a wonderful view of Barcelona, the port and the sea. Montjuic is an imposing castle and it was built in the 17th century and today it is an attraction for tourists who want to enjoy not only the view but also the nature. The castle was built in 1640 through Philip IV. It served to oversee the city and not, as many people suppose, to defend the city.
The fortress was used as a prison for political prisoners from the 20th Century and where many executions have taken place. During the civil war in Spain, there were 173 people executed including the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys in 1940.
After restoration works of three years, a military museum was opened in the castle in 1963. In the museum, visitors can see weapons and military artifacts from various eras and different countries. In addition, exhibitions, seminars and even concerts are organized in the castle. In Sala 18 you can see the tombstones of the Jewish cemetery from the 11th century; which were located in the Montjuïc area.
The hill of Montjuïc has a relatively flat top overlooking the harbor, to the southwest of the city center. The eastern side of the hill is a bit like a sheer cliff, giving an impressive view over the city's harbor below. The top of the hill (with a height of 185 meters) was used to be the site of several fortifications. Because of the beautiful nature, the numerous paths and fountains and the beautiful scenery, it is worth visiting the castle by foot. But the castle can also be reached by bus, taxi or there is the possibility to reach the Castle by Barcelona's cable car, which starts at the harbor of Barcelona.
How to get to the museum:
Metro lines L2 Paral Lel and line L3 Paral Lel. From here you can take the Cable Bar to the hill of Monjuïc. Or take a bus or a taxi.
