Shopping in Barcelona is not like London, it is in fact a much more tolerable experience! Everyone loves to shop, but especially around busy times of year, like Christmas,there are too many people and too much to choose from, that it can be very stressful. However Barcelona is definitely a much calmer experience, the streets are wider, there are fewer tourists in the winter, and there are lots of branches of the same shop. For high street shops you should look in Portal de Angel, Las Ramblas and El Triangle and for your designer labels head up to Passeig de Gracia.

The history of the markets we know nowadays is, indeed, quite recent. This is because they had to develop new areas in the city in order for the markets to be able to exist, thus knocking down other places, but like they say, "for there to be creation there has to be destruction" and that was how the Boqueria arose.

Bevor man die Märkte in Barcelona vorstellt, sollte man vorerst die Geschichte des Marktes erläutern. Alles begann in einer Epoche, die der eine schnelle und preiswerte Zuvor mit Nahrungsmitteln immer mehr an Bedeutung gewann. Auch Kleidung sowie Haushaltswaren waren sehr gefragt.

Anfangs waren die Märkte noch klein und bescheiden doch schon bald entwickelten sie sich zu Tausch-und Kaufzentren, die immer mehr von der Bevölkerung frequentiert wurden. Durch die Vergrößerung der Märkte wurde nicht nur das Angebot vielfältiger sondern man konnte sie auch immer besser erreichen. Der Sinn des Marktes war erfüllt: das Leben der Bevölkerung zu vereinfachen.

In Barcelona gibt es nach wie vor eine große Anzahl an Märkten, die in der ganzen Stadt verteilt sind. Diese Tradition nimmt auch im 21. Jahrhundert nicht ab  und jeder Markt besitzt ein eigenes flair, so als hätte jeder seine eigene Geschichte zu erzählen.

Einige Märkte befinden sich schon seit Jahrzehnten in der Stadt wie beispielsweise die Stände auf Las Ramblas. Einst gab es hier Geschäfte bis zu dem Tag, an dem sie nach lukrativere Orte verlagert wurden.
