As one of the most “gay friendly” cities in the world, Barcelona has even got dedicated areas for its gay and lesbian communities. So much is the vibrant life in this city that there are annual events celebrated every year. Depending on the time of year you find yourself in Barcelona, and if you want to experience one of these oustanding events, be sure to get your Barcelona accommodation organised before hand.

Here are some of the events you can expect to experience during the year:

Sonar Festival

The Sonar Festival in Barcelona is one of the largest events in the city and here is where you can experience great music as well as dancing the days away to dance and electro music. Taking place between June 14th to 16th, prepare yourself as this eagerly awaited festival, which is in its 19th year will make you and the city of Barcelona move to its own beat.

Gay Pride

Next up, the world famous Gay Pride takes centre stage during the 22nd of June till the 1st of July.  This annual event is a lively one, with plenty of bright colours and sights to keep your eyes glued. Gay Pride Parade starts from Plaça Universitat and follows the route from Via Gran Via, Carrer de Sepúlveda and Plaça Espanya to the street fair, stages and party area in Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina.

Taking place at the same time is the Mimi LGBT Short Film Festival, which follows the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) theme. Mimi first come to light as an innovated idea to help promote the LGBT art and culture throughout the country and today this popular event has not looked back. This is just one of the many film festivals put on by the Catalan Capital.

San Juan

One of the biggest nights in the Barcelona calendar, San Juan takes place on the 23rd of June and is a night fuelled by sublime fireworks displays and huge bonfires. It is quite common to see old furniture being used to stoke the fires, but the best show of all will be in Montjuic. This night is a perfect excuse for making your way to Barcelona and afterwards one of the biggest gay beach parties will take place.

Exotic Mediterranean Cruise

The name says it all, and this gay cruise promises to be a great adventure. The latest ship, Nieuw Amsterdam sets sail from Barcelona for Morocco and onboard 2100 gay and lesbian guests will mingle with each as they visit Casablanca, Cadiz, Valencia and stay overnight in Ibiza.

Circuit Festival

Prepare yourself for one of Barcelona’s best gay and lesbian event, and what’s more you can expect over 60.000 people readying themselves for this same popular event. With every year getting better and better, this 10 day summer event which is taking place between the 2nd and 12th of August also includes a gay day at the water park.

La Mercè

Barcelona's Fiesta Mayor, and is not a just to celebrate the Patron Saint of Barcelona, but an entire week filled with activities. This event is so popular amongst Barcelona’s international and local guests, it is important to organize your accommodation in BCN soon. Mark the dates in your diaries: 23rd September to the 27th.
