Work of arquitect Berenguer de Montagut, the church of Santa María del Mar is one of the best examples of 15th century Catalan gothic architecture. The first stone was placed as the crowning of the conquest of Sardinia, which completed the Catalan domination in the Mediterranean that had begun one hundred years before the conquest of Mallorca reaching its full expansion with the entry of Sicily and Greece into the domains of House of Barcelona.
It is the only large Catalan Gothic church that was fully completed, whose characteristics differ from the European gothic style.

Viewed from the exterior, the church has a solid and robust presence, dominated by straight lines. The interior consists of three naves, an ambulatory without intersection. The great height of the main nave dominates, with  majestic octagonal columns. The interior of the church posesses incredible beauty and  acoustic conditions that make it ideal for concerts, having been used for jazz recitals as well as classical and oriental concerts.

Today, the church is one of the most visited in the city. This is partly due to the novel of Oldefonso Falcones, La catedral del mar, which  has sold more than a million copies, and has been translated into many  languages. There are also references to the church in Carlos Ruis Zafón`s novel El juego del ángel.
