The location of Maritime Museum dates back to the 13th century when the first shipyard was built, and since it the olden days it was used as an arsenal of ships. Then in 1936 it was decided to turn it into a museum and they begun to restore it. It is constantly being preserved, extended and developed nevertherless history lives in its walls and its port-side loacation makes the experience all the more authentic. Situated at the foot of the Ramblas just west of the Colombus monument.
Inside the Maritime Museum you are very much left to your own devices with headphones and a tape recorded in many languages. You will be shown ships of all shapes and sizes and lots of naval gear like maps, compasses and things the Spanish brought back from their voyages to unknown countries.

Some of the most famous boat models on show are Magellan's Santa María de la Victoria on which he did the first circumnavigation of the world. There is also a full size replica of Juan de Austria's lepanto "galera" which you cannot miss as the talking tour takes you all the way around it. Then on the deck there is a virtual recreation of the crew of one of these ships, where you can begin to understand what they went through on these gut-wrenching journeys.
It is a perfect day out for all the family. Filled with hugely interesting history and culture for the adults and brimming with exciting thing for the children to see, you will not be disappointed.
