Taxis in Barcelona

Barcelona is swarming with taxis like any busy city. In a central place you will not be waiting more than 5 minutes for an availiable one. Just like in London or New York the standard hand signal will hail you a cab that is on the move, although be aware in Barcelona nearly all the streets are one-way so you want to make sure you are hailing on in the right direction as it can waste you time and money and the taxi driver may be reluctant to pick you up. There are taxi ranks everywhere. As you come out of any big metro station it is rare not to find a queue of them. As you would expect when the green light is showing, they are free and occupied if not.
The rates of the taxis are not at all bad. The meter always starts on 2 euros for any inner city fare but increases if you go, for instance, to the airport. The prices also increase after 8 at night and on the weekend. Bare in mind also that you pay for each substantial piece of luggage, it is 1 euro per piece so all in all a taxi from the airport to the centre of Barcelona is going to cost about 30 euros on a week day.
