Barcelona City Guide The best things to see and do in Barcelona

Santa Maria del Mar

The Santa Maria del Mar is highly recommended when visiting Barcelona, since the church is known as the most beautiful Gothic church around. The church is one of the Barcelona's landmarks, located in the middle of La Ribera district, it has monumental towers which makes it look like a fortress. Attractions are prominent, particularly inside the Santa Maria del Mar. The design is unique and was really groundbreaking at the time of its construction.

The very formal looking church was built in the 14th century, it took about 55 years to build the Santa Maria del Mar. It was designed by master builder Berenguer de Montagut.

The construction

The construction of today`s gothic church; Santa Maria del Mar started in 1329 with the foundation. It was the only Gothic church which has been completed within one architectural period, which makes it individual and special. Unfortunately in 1714 the church was partially destroyed in the Spanish war of succession. The damage was just barely repaired. Then in 1936 there was a next war; the Spanish civil war which caused a fire and reeked mass devastation. The fire destroyed almost the whole interior. A large part of the stained-glass windows had to be reconstructed and in 1990 the restoration work had been completed and the cathedral was open for visitors again.

The interior

If you are an art and history lover you definitely have to visit Santa Maria Del Mar. It gives you a narrow nave, which is the amount and length of the basilica stress. The stained-glass windows let the room flood with subdued light colors. Around the church you can see some little chapels, which can be compared with a cloister.

You are interested in a piece of the Spanish history and love to read about special buildings and places? One tip: The novel Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones, describes the time during the construction of the Santa Maria del Mar, which is very impressive. After you have read this bestselling book, you will see the Gothic quarter with different eyes.

Nowadays, the church is one of the most visited in the city. This is partly due to the novel of Ildefonso Falcones, La catedral del mar, which has sold more than a million copies, and has been translated into many languages.
