Plaza Sant Felip Neri
This Plaza is a magical square in the Barrio Gótico, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. Built on the grounds of a medieval cemetery. With a church whose façade is pockmarked with bullet holes from pro-franquista shootings and shrapnel marks from a bomb dropped in the civil war overlooks a beautiful fountain, conjuring up an air of eerie nostalgia.
The square is notoriously difficult to find, hidden at the end of a tiny street behind the Barcelona cathedral. It is especially enchanting at night, exciting feelings of delightful timelessness. The square was featured in a music video by the band Evanescence, which captured the ambience of the square perfectly. A must see for those looking for something special during their stay in Barcelona.
The history of this square is quite a sad one. The pock marks covering the front of the church was caused by a bomb that killed approximately 20 children who were seeking for a shelter. But yet it retains a certain charm and beauty somehow. The memorial plaque honors those who have died here. If you are in Barcelona and you can manage to find this exquisite square, it is a short walk from the Barcelona's Cathedral, it is a quiet, nice and beautiful spot when the street life gets too much for a minute. For any lover of history in general, it is an ideal spot for an early stroll.
