The Raval area is perhaps the most interesting part of the old city to book Rentals Barcelona. It combines in great harmony the old and traditional Barcelona with the modern and “fashion” character of which Barcelona is famous for. Historically the Raval used to be very densely populated until the city walls were removed around the beginning of the 20th century and the Eixample area was constructed.

The Southern most part of the Raval, close to the port also used to be famous as the city’s red-light district. However in 1988 the government started a huge urban regeneration project and invested a lot of money in modernizing the area and it has become much more modern and significantly more attractive. Today the district is a mixture of the old and the new, the foreign and the local, the sophisticated and the popular.

The upper part of the Raval houses today Universities, the Contemporary Culture Center (CCCB), the FAD (Barcelona Design Office) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (the MACBA) built by the famous architect Richard Meier, at the Plaça dels Angels: a large public space, meeting point of international skateboarders, an arty crafty crowd and children of all colours and languages playing on the streets. For the visitor to Barcelona it is interesting to wander around and discover the great variety of gastronomic offers, buy, see, have a haircut or just have a drink.

The Rambla del Raval is one of those spaces developed by the City Council, it is a promenade similar to the Ramblas, rimmed with palm trees and surrounded by plenty of bars and restaurants. There are terraces to eat or have a beer. At weekends there is a very nice artisans market, with a jaima (arab tent) where you can have a mint tea and delicious arab pastries. Some of the most famous restaurants of Barcelona are located in the Raval, such as the “Casa Leopoldo”, the restaurant of the new Hotel Barceló, “L’hortet” and others.
