Located immediately to the west of the Rambla is the famous Barri Gòtic or Gothic quarter, formerly known as the Cathedral Quarter. Its area extends roughly from the Rambla to the Plaça Nova(L-5). This is where the Roman Barcino colony was founded in the first century and whose roman wall dates back to the third century. Perhaps the period of the city's greatest splendour was from the XIII-XV centuries, in which most of this Gothic Quarter was built and today contains many of the city's most emblematic buildings.

The narrow, winding streets create quite a labyrinth and means that it may take a while to get your bearings. We recommend that you should always look up and around you or you may miss some of the nicest sites. The Gothic quarter has plenty of peaceful squares (plazas) where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Two of the prettiest squares are Plaça del Pi, with its Gothic basilica, and neighbouring Plaça Sant Josep Oriol. They're both lively places that turn into artist's markets on weekends. However one of the main attractions, right in the centre of this district is the enormous Cathedral of Barcelona which has an amazing courtyard full of plants and oddly, geese.

Shopping is also great experience in the Gothic part of Barcelona, from the more busy and commercial area of Calle Portal del Angel to all the little shops on Calle Avinyo. Make sure you wander around to experience and enjoy all you can, this Quarter of Barcelona is perfect for that afternoon stroll.

There are metro stops on both sides of the Gothic Quarter, there are 3 on  the Ramblas which runs up one side of the area, and on the other side is the Jaume 1 staion. However this quarter is relatively small and most of the city’s attractions are a walk away distance.
