London guide - Londra'da ziyaret edilecek yerler
Covent Garden is one of the most visited areas in London for its shopping, street life and most famous building The Royal Opera House. Full of street performers and little boutiques it is one of the most diverse places in London.
In the olden times Covent Garden was a market where all sorts of exotic things were traded, having been shipped up the river Thames. After the Great Fire of London which destroyed all the other markets it became the most important market in the country. Nowadays it plays host to wonderful markets such as the Late Night Food Market launcged in 2007. The street performers are a huge part of the area and it is in fact the only place in London where it is legal. The street performer evenhave to audition ifront of local officials to be given permission to act there.
Covent Garden was also a huge part of the wonderful story of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion which was later adapted into a musical by ALan Jay Lemer under the more famous title of My Fair Lady. The wonderful tale of a poor girl who sells flowers in Covent Garden and who is taken under the wing of Henry Higgins.
There is so much to see in Covent Garden like The London Transport Museum and it is in a great location in the very east of Westminster that there is so much to do around it. The West End, and thus all the theatres on The Strand and Shaftesbury Avenue are just a stones throw away so you can find plenty to amuse yourself in that part of the city.
