Chelsea is the center of New York City art world with around 400 art galleries. It goes from West 14th Street to West 34th Street, and from west of Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River. Previously an industrial neighborhood, it is now converted in a high-end, lively and vibrant neighborhood known for its artistic, cultural, and recreational resources. Elbow room and fresh air are also to be found everywhere, you can run, bike, swim and skate around historic locales and great shopping.

One of the must see of this district is the Highline, New York City's newest park. Going through the Western edge of Chelsea, it has been built on the bed of an abandoned elevated train track. This venue is known for its extraordinary sky watching events, concerts and nature walks. You also need to check out Chelsea Market, where Oreos, America’s favorite cookies, where invented. This one-block long walkway is great if you want to to enjoy a nosh or some gourmet-tasting, it has about every food wholesaler you can imagine.

Sports are also a big part of Chelsea’s culture. There are so many recreational facilities at the Chelsea Piers sport and entertainment complex, that everyone will be pleased. You can go golfing, bowling, skating, rock climbing, have fun at the fitness center and relax at the deluxe spa. You can also bike or rollerblade down the Hudson River. Even kids can be entertained in the many sports programs including soccer, gymnastics or basketball.

The architecture is like no other in this section but you can divide buildings in three “categories”: the brownstone type, from the industrial influence, the “housing project” type and the “industrial/loft building” type from the stylish conversion of this neighborhood. One of the most famous buildings is the iconic Chelsea Hotel created in 1833 where many writers and artists have settled down. Even if you can’t get a room there, you can take a tour that is worth the trip.
