London guide - London attractions
Tate Modern is a British national museum of international modern art in London. Together with the Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives is part of the Tate (former Tate Gallery). The whole collection is also available online.
The museum is located on the south bank of the Thames at Southwark, in the near the Globe Theater and the Millennium Bridge. The galery building was once the main hall of Bankside Power Plant, which was built in the years 1947-1963. A large part of the plant have been excluded from use in 1981. However, the southern wing of the building, now owned by French energy group EDF Energy, performs it´s primary function today. The museum building was opened at May 12 2000 after the reconstruction based on the project of office Herzog & de Meuron. Since the openning, the Tate Modern is considered to be one of the most interesting museums presenting modern art in the world, compared to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Permanent exhibitions are presented at levels 3, and 5. On the 4 level you can find the major temporary exhibitions, and a smaller exhibition area is located on the 2nd flor (works by modern artists). Turbine Hall (storey 1), which the power generators were, has a height of seven-levels-building and the area of 3400 sqm.
