Berlin Guide - Other Attractions
The Berlin zoo (Zoologischer Garten Berlin) is one of the biggest zoos in Germany and has one of the greatest number of species in the world. It is located in the Tiergarten district close to the S-Bahn station Zoologischer Garten in the city center.
The zoo was opened on the 1 August of 1844 and was the first zoo in Germany. The first species of animals have been donated by Frederick William IV Hohenzollern from the menagerie and aviary Tiergarten. During the World War II, the area of the garden was completely destroyed. Only 91 animals survived.
Currently, about 14 000 animals of 1 500 different species are leaving in the "rooms" of the zoo. The whole object is situated on 35 hectares. The "animal superstars" of the zoo are great pandas, which live only in few zoos in the world. Another one is Knut - the polar bear, which was born in Zoologischer Garten.
Berlin Zoo is one of the most visited gardens in Europe. Annually the zoo has nearly 2.6 million visitors from around the world. Open all year round, located in a favorable position, where it is easy to get with the Berlin´s public transport. Visitors can enter the garden through the exotic gate in a shape of elephant, located near the Aquarium, or through the Lion Gate at Hardenbergplatz.
