This particular piece of land near the cathedral surrounded by the waters of the river Spree used to be palace gardens. At the beginning of 19th century King Frederick William III decided to build museums precisely there. He was the sponsor, and the originator of a professionally organized group of exhibition buildings. On the Museum Island (Museumsinsel), there are five main museums: Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Pergamonmuseum and the Bode Museum.
Closest to the cathedral stands a neo-classical building with a facade decorated with a row of Ionian columns, built in the years 1823-1830 and designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in the '60s of the 20th century. Here is located Altes Museum, where you'll admire the collection of Greek and Roman art, sculptures and ceramics. Since August 2005, visitors can also see the collections in Ägyptisches Museum (Egyptian Museum). They include sarcophags, paintings and sculptures, for example, images of Nefertiti, wife of Amenhotep IV.
Near Altes Museum you can see, surrounded by columns, similar to the ancient temple, Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery). It was completed in 1876 by Friedrich August Stüler. After the reconstruction in 2001, the visitors can now access here again to admire works of nineteenth-century artists, mainly German, including Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Adolph Menzel, Caspar David Friedrich, Johann Erdmann Hummel, Eduard Gaertner, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne.
However, the most frequently visited museum facility of the entire complex is known throughout whole Europe, the Pergamonmuseum, located in a building inspired by the Babylonian temple. The collection includes amongs others archaeological finds discovered during excavations conducted by German prospectors in the Middle East. Exhibitions are divided into three sections: ancient, Middle Eastern and Arab art. The best-known treasures are: huge Pergamon Altar, reconstruction of the babylonian Ishtar Gate and the gate of the Agora of Miletus.
To the left of the Pergamonmuseum, at the end of the museum island rises a neo-baroque building topped with a dome, it is the Bode Museum (Museum of the Earth). The exhibitions consist mostly out of sculpture (mainly German) and a collection of Byzantine art from the early Middle Ages to the 18th century.
The last object is a building of Neues Museum, which was built in the shape of an ancient temple to present the Egyptian art collections.
