Berlin Guide - Landmarks

Reichstag

Reichstag, officially Plenarbereich Reichstagsgebaude, is the seat of the German Bundestag. It was built in neo-renaissance style, based on plans by architect Paul Wallota during 1884-1894. Until 1918 the Reichstag the Second Reich was situated here. In 1933 the building was almost completely destroyed by fire. In the 60s it was rebuilt in a new form and again rebuilt in 1991-1999.
With two glass elevators you can get on the roof with a glass dome with a diameter of 38 m, 23.5 m height and the weight of 200 tonnes. The Dome is an ecological design, which allows the lighting and ventilation of the debating chamber. Daylight is directed through 360 mirrors into the building. If necessary the mirrors can be covered and uncovered by a computer system, so that the amount of light is always adequate. A special ventilation system allows not only fresh air supply, but also the recovery of heat. In addition, a special system is installed in the dome which collects rain water. It is definitely worth seeing not only because of the view, but also to get to know the newest technology.
