London guide - London attractions
London's one of the most famous sightseeing places, built in 1819, is an area that is live for 24 hours. With connections to the main streets and metro stations it is the hot spot of the city where you can see both tourists and locals at the same time. The first purpose of building this plaza was to connect the Regent Street with the Piccadilly Street but today it is the iconic symbol of UK's capital.
In the square there is the Shaftesbury Monument Memorial Fountain with a statue of an archer usually referred to the mythical Greek God Eros. Other than those landmarks, the square is surrounded with others like Criterion Theatre on the south side which was built in 1874 and London Pavilion on the north-eastern side was built in 1859.
More to today, there are several retailers around the square, one of them is the famous Lilywhite, which is focused on the sports goods. Also since the circle joins directly to famous Oxford Street the shopping adventure starts there with department stores like Selfridges and Marks and Spencer. Another connection leads you to the famous Soho district with a variety option of clubs, bars and restaurants.
During time, the plaza has been a quiet effective medium for the worldwide known companies such as Sanyo (the oldest sign still), Guiness, Boots and Coca-Cola. The only thing that changes in these ads is the techniques -from neon lamps to LCDs- that are used as the technology offers and allows more and more each day.
