New York City Guide - Visiting New York

New Years Eve Times Square

One of the most iconic places to spend the New Year is of course the city that never sleeps, New York City. Experiencing the celebration of the beginning of the New Year in the Big Apple is a fantastic experience. Whether you fancy going to one of the many fantastic parties on offer in the City or you want to experience the world famous ball drop in Times Square.

The Times Square ball drop is one of the most famous venues for celebrating the New Year worldwide. Each year, around one million gather in Times Square to watch the ball made by Waterford Crystal drop 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute. It is estimated that around 1 billion people worldwide watch the video of the event showing its poignancy. The event is shown live on American television with the most famous programme, ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. To be in Times Square at midnight is a great experience and the feel of the place as the excitement builds is a great experience and a great way to see in the New Year. To get the best view of the ball drop then it is recommended that you arrive early to get a good spot.

NYC Fireworks

If you don´t want to be standing outside in the cold as the clock strikes 12 then New York has a large number of great parties for you to attend. Every major venue in the city throws a party to celebrate the New Year so there are a huge number of parties on the night but as with every major venue, New Year is a special night and we strongly recommend that you buy tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Here is a list of some of the venues that are available to you on New Years.

If you want to do something very different for New Years this year then one of the best ways is by going on a New Years cruise. Most of the cruises available such as the Half Moon Cruise, include sailing around the New York Harbour from 8.30-2.30 enjoying the sites of New York with a resident DJ as well as a great atmosphere. You will get a great view of the fireworks at midnight and entry onto the cruise also usually involves entry into a afterparty back on land. This is a great night and a unique way to celebrate the New Year.

Like most of the English speaking countries, the USA and New York celebrate the arrival of the New Year by singing the old Scottish song "Auld Lang Syne". This has been sung on Britain for many years and in 1929, it was first played at midnight at a New Year's eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel and since then a tradition has been born with now many Americans believing that a New Year has not arrived until they heard the sounds of "Auld Lang Syne".
