London guide - London attractions
Born of a very rich history, the Tower of London holds legend, mystery, death, power and majesty within its walls.
A must see stop on the tourist circuit in London, the Tower is found on the north shore of the river Thames, and is a compound of different buildings which has served as a fortress, an armoury, a treasure store, a palace, an observatory, a refuge and a prison for monarchs, nobles and people from the clergy.
It started as a fortress to protect London. In 1066 it was merely a fort made of wood but in 1078, organised by William the Conqueror,it was converted into an enormous square bulding, 32m by 36m with a height of almost 30m, built from stone sourced from France. It is an intimidating structure which rises high in an immense landscape.
Other kings who followed added towers of different shapes and sizes, but it was Richard the Lion Heart who had the deep moat made, making the fortress one of the most secure in Europe. The Tower was used as an actual residence in the 18th century until, during the reign of Elizabeth, it was converted into a prison for enemies of the crown, withmore of them being executed like anne Boleyn, Cathereine Howard, Jane Grey and Thomas More.
Declared as a cultural national wealth, the Tower guards the Crown Jewels which can be seen by those who visit it.
Custodious gaurds, better known as Beefeaters carry out the ceremony of the keys every afetrnoon which secures the Tower for the night.
