Brandenburger Tor
Thursday, 14 January 2010 14:43
Probably the most famous building in Berlin is the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), the only one of the fourteen gates of the city which has survived to this day. During the times of Berlin's partition the gate was closed by the Berlin Wall. After the reunification of Germany it became one of the symbols of the re-united country.
Build in 1791, the Branderburger Gate is not only a gateway, but also a triumphal arch. In 1793, on the top of the arch, the famous quadriga driven by a woman was set. Initially the figure presented a woman leading the chariot that stands for the goddess of peace - Ejrene, and the whole building were called 'the Gate of Peace'. In 1814 Ejrene was equipped with the Prussian eagle and the Iron Cross. The goddess of peace became Victoria, the goddess of victory.
