Berlin Guide - Landmarks

Alexanderplatz

The Alexanderplatz, or popularly called Alex, is a square and traffic junction in the Eastern part of Berlin. Daily more than 300.000 people are passing by. The square is situated in the district ‘Mitte’ and is named after Tsaar Alexander I. The fountain on the square is a well-known meeting point with the locals. Near the square a big tourist attraction is situated, the Fernseheturm (TV Tower).

In the time of the DDR the square was a artificial created centre of East Berlin with neighboring to the square important government buildings and prestige projects under which the Interhotel Stadt Berlin.

After the ‘Wende’ there were made plans for a complete rebuilt of the square at which a lot of existing building would be broken down and replaced by new construction. Disappointing economic growth caused that the plans still aren’t executed. Only the department store Kaufhof was drastically being reconstructed at which the frontage was moved towards the square and South East of the square the new shopping mall Alexa was build. In the North Eastern part of the square they started with the built of a new office/shopping building in 2007. This to give the square a more closed appearance.
